How to Hit a Slow Pitch Softball to Right Field

Driving the ball to right field in slow-pitch softball can pay dividends for you and your team. Slow-pitch softball is a high-scoring game with a lot of long hits. Pitchers are not going to shut down the opposition. However, good defensive teams can end rallies by positioning their players correctly and forcing offensive players to hit into that alignment. That’s why hitting the ball to right field can have a big impact. When the defense is playing a right-handed batter to pull the ball, a hit to opposite field can turn a close game into a route.

Step 1

Stand in the back corner of the batter’s box that is farthest from home plate. Your goal is to drive the ball to right field, and the last thing you want is to get tied up by an inside pitch. Standing in the back corner will allow you to take a step toward home plate and hit any pitch comfortably to right field. As soon as you take that step, you are in a position to hit the inside pitch and the pitch over the middle to right field. If the pitch is over the outer half of the plate, a second step will help you reach it.

Step 2

Drive your hands through the hitting zone, but don’t change the angle of your wrists until you make contact with the ball. As you do make contact, your bat will be angled toward right field. Explode with your hips as you continue your swing. This will allow you to drive the ball to right with conviction.

Step 3

Take your normal stance in the batter’s box with your left shoulder facing the pitcher. As he prepares to release the ball, change the angle of your body so your left shoulder faces the second baseman. Swing the bat forcefully. With this stance, the only place the ball can go is toward right or right center field.

Step 4

Wait as long as you can before swinging the bat. There is little danger of swinging late in slow-pitch softball. You are not going to be overpowered by a fastball. The longer you wait before you swing the bat, the harder you will hit the ball. If you wait long enough, you will drive the ball to right field and have a good chance of finding gaps in the defense.
